Surviving Without a Dream
MWP is supporting a documentary project that will raise awareness of the challenges faced by Kachin refugees in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This video is a pilot that was created to introduce the themes of the main film which is currently in pre-production.
Surviving Without a Dream - the documentary
Escaping from the devastating conflict that rages on in northern Myanmar, Kachin refugees undertake dangerous journeys over land and sea in search of safety and security in Malaysia. But, long after their arrival in Kuala Lumpur, these remain elusive. Without legal recognition, refugees and asylum seekers in Malaysia are denied access to legal employment, education and affordable healthcare. Worse still, they run the risk of police extortion, arrest and detention. “Surviving Without a Dream” reveals a community trapped between a homeland they cannot return to, a host country which rejects them and the fading hope of resettlement in a third country.
